History of Ford's Brittany Blue

History of Ford's Brittany Blue

Introduced in the 1960s, Brittany Blue was a subtle, understated alternative to the loud, high-impact colors of the muscle car era, and it quickly became a fan favorite. Today, Velocity keeps that legacy alive, bringing the same head-turning energy to its Ford-badged Re-Engineered Classics™.

If you’re a lifelong Blue Oval fan, chances are the mere mention of Brittany Blue conjures the same instant mental picture that Hugger Orange does for devotees of Chevrolet. Both of these classic colors are a testament to the power of a perfect paint job, yet while Chevy’s color screams high performance, Ford’s Brittany Blue is a robin-egg shade with a cooler, calmer attitude.

That understated charisma is precisely why the color became an instant favorite with discerning enthusiasts. Since 2012, Velocity has kept that legacy alive on its Ford-badged Re-Engineered Classics™.

History Of Brittany Blue

Just as Detroit’s Big Three battled it out with cubic inches and horsepower figures during the muscle-car era, these companies also made bold statements with bright, “high-impact” colors. While Ford answered its rivals with hues such as Grabber Blue and Candy Apple Red, Brittany Blue offered more of a subtle beauty. This pastel-leaning, metallic light blue was first introduced in 1964 on the Ford Thunderbird and Lincoln Continental, but the 1967 model year cemented this color as a legend.

Unlike many of its day-glow contemporaries, Brittany Blue’s appeal was rooted in versatility, making it perfect for Ford to apply on performance vehicles, luxury sedans, and even trucks, vans, and SUVs. This color looked just as good on a classic Ford Mustang (including the Shelby GT500) as it did on the larger Ford Galaxie models, and it was also available on the Ford Econoline, Ford F-Series, and, in 1970, the Ford Bronco. Other nameplates offered in Brittany Blue included the Ford Falcon, Ford Fairlane, Mercury Comet, and Mercury Cougar

Like many vintage hues, Brittany Blue was phased out in the early 1970s as Ford updated its palettes to keep pace with shifting color trends. Brittany Blue remains a popular color in regards to the restoration of classic Ford cars and trucks, and it is by far the most popular color when customers are speccing their bespoke Re-Engineered Classic Ford Broncos built by Velocity. To mark the 60th anniversary of the Mustang, Ford debuted a limited-edition version of the 2025 Mustang, which is even available in Brittany Blue (shown above).

Brittany Blue Legacy

At Velocity, Brittany Blue has become a signature finish for our Ford-badge Re-Engineered Classics™. Brittany Blue might not shout like Grabber Orange or one of Mopar's High-Impact hues, but that’s precisely why it endures. It’s the perfect expression of stealth wealth, whether you’re hedging out on a Sunday morning drive in a classic Mustang, carving corners in the F-100 restomod, or heading to the beach in a vintage Ford Bronco.
