Big-Time Bowtie: Classic Chevy K5 Blazer Shows Off On-Screen

The classic Chevy K5 Blazer is ready for action, both on-screen and in your collection.

Earlier this year,  celebrity couple Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker were spotted driving one of Velocity’s classic Chevy K5 Blazer restomods in Calabasas, California, sparking conversation among automotive enthusiasts and pop culture fans alike. But the vintage K5 Blazer, with its rugged appeal and timeless design, is no stranger to the spotlight. In fact, it has long been a vehicle that effortlessly steals the show, whether cruising down Main Street or taking center stage in some of Hollywood’s biggest productions.

From cult-classic movies to beloved television shows, the classic Chevy K5 Blazer has cemented itself as an American automotive pop culture icon. Its presence on screen mirrors its real-life persona—a bold, capable SUV that helped define the active lifestyle segment long before SUVs became the dominant force they are today. Whether tackling rugged terrain or cruising through suburban neighborhoods, the vintage K5 Blazer is effective on-screen and in real life.

Here’s a look at some of the K5 Blazer’s most memorable appearances, which have helped secure its place as a cultural symbol of freedom, adventure, and durability.

Transformers: The Last Knight

No, the classic Chevy K5 Blazer wasn’t an Autobot in 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight, but this vintage SUV was transformed into an attention-grabbing custom truck. Making the most of its brief appearance with Mark Wahlberg behind the wheel, the vintage K5 Blazer looks like an assault vehicle with tube doors and lots of weapons.

Misery

The classic Ford Mustang met an early demise in Stephen King’s 1990 psychological thriller Misery, but the classic Chevy K5 Blazer appeared later in the movie. Even viewers who aren’t car enthusiasts took note during the Blazer’s pivotal as it offered a slight glimmer of hope for Paul Sheldon’s rescue.

Jaws

The second-generation K5 Blazer (1973-1991) made one of its most notable appearances in 1975’s Jaws, the blockbuster film that terrorized beachgoers nationwide. In Jaws, the K5 Blazer played a small but iconic role as the vehicle of choice for the island’s sheriff, Chief Brody.

Stranger Things

In recent years, the classic K5 Blazer has made a splash on the small screen, with its retro charm perfectly suited for Stranger Things’ 1980s setting. This Blazer is a staple of the show driven by the series’ beloved Jim Hopper, chief of the Hawkins, Indiana police department. The popularity of the K5 Blazer has increased after its appearance in this show, including numerous videos that create scale models of Hopper’s police truck.

Everybody Wins

The 1990 crime drama Everybody Wins features an early Chevy K5 Blazer alongside Nick Nolte and Debra Winger. The movie was loosely based on true events, but the coolest video we could dig up showing the Blazer in action is this behind-the-scenes action showing both actors in the truck.

Sometimes A Great Notion

Fitting in with the logging theme of Sometimes a Great Notion, the K5 Blazer is the perfect star car to match Oregon’s rugged setting and rough terrain. This 1971 film features Paul Newman, and the K5 Blazer gets plenty of screen time.

Soak Up The Sun

Switching gears to a more carefree role, the vintage K5 Blazer makes a brief and early appearance in Sheryl Crow’s 2002 Soak Up the Sun music video. In the video, the Blazer shows more of its laid-back lifestyle capability among the surfing and beach-going crowd.
