Bronco Restomod vs. Restored G-Wagen: Why The Velocity Ford Bronco Is Best For Any Expedition

Bronco Restomod vs. Restored G-Wagen: Why The Velocity Ford Bronco Is Best For Any Expedition

Why settle for a restored Wolf, when you can experience a brand-new Coyote in a Velocity Ford Bronco restomod!

The Ford Bronco is one of the most sought-after nameplates in the classic car industry right now, to the extent that Expedition Motor Company (builder of the restored mil-spec G-Wagen Wolf) admits that “everyone and their mom has one.” That’s because the 1966-77 Broncos are in ultra-high demand among enthusiasts, who know these trucks are ready for work or play, and classic car collectors, who desire Broncos for their exceptional value.

As diehard classic car enthusiasts and Bronco specialists, Velocity is here to set the record straight. If you’re cross-shopping the classic Ford Bronco with a restored mil-spec G-Wagen Wolf, like the ones sold by Expedition Motor Company, here are some things you need to know:

Velocity Ford Bronco Ride Quality

Who wants to own a classic truck that is too rough around the edges to truly enjoy? Military vehicles were designed to perform many tasks, but providing passenger comfort is not on that list. A pretty interior will only get you so far when driving a classic truck, so Velocity engineered its vintage Ford Bronco restomod to stand out by focusing as much on styling and performance as it does comfort.

That’s why Velocity builds most of its Bronco restomods on state-of-the-art Roadster Shop frames. You can drive a Velocity Bronco daily without needing a chiropractor afterward, and you won’t need Olympic high jumper skills to climb in the cab thanks to the standard power-retractable side steps.

Brand-New Powertrain

Many builders restore vital components of a classic vehicle, but since Velocity restomods are meant to be driven, every element of the Velocity Ford Bronco’s driveline is brand new, from the crate engine and transmission down to the axles and internals. Under the hood is Ford’s advanced Gen III 5.0L Coyote V8, rated at 460 hp/420 lb-ft of torque, and it’s backed by a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission and Atlas two-speed transfer case. This power is sent to the ground through new axles: Dana 44 up front and a Ford 9-inch rear end.

The restored G-Wagen Wolf, often positioned against the Velocity Ford Bronco restomod, appears to have had most of its driveline rebuilt, including the Mercedes OM602 five-cylinder diesel engine. In its defense, inline diesel engines are practically indestructible, but while they have gobs of low-end torque, they are notoriously low on horsepower (about 127 horsepower in this engine’s case). That’s a perfect combination for getting out of the messy terrain that military vehicles must endure, but it’s horrible for driving around town where acceleration, such as merging on the interstate or taking off from a traffic light, is critical.

In addition to its horsepower discrepancy, the diesel G-Wagen must be taken to a specialist for repairs and maintenance, while the Coyote is easily serviceable at any major shop.

Lasting Value

The allure of the classic Ford Bronco has withstood the test of time, which is why it has one of the strongest values when it comes to high-volume classics. Sure, there are trendy classics out there that might stand out a bit more at car shows, but they can be hit or miss when it comes time to sell. With the vintage Ford Broncos’ high demand and the resurgence of the new body style, these trucks will continue to appreciate as you own them.

Classic American Style

Americans fell in love (and remain in love) with the classic Ford Bronco due to its legendary off-road capabilities and rugged good looks. The compact size and boxy body gave enthusiasts a small but capable vehicle to enjoy the outdoors, from beach cruising to trail crawling, inspiring a new generation of off-road vehicles and off-road enthusiasts. Similarly, old-school G-Wagens have a cool boxy look, but they look eerily similar to the Volkswagen Type 181 (aka, the VW Thing), which is basically a mil-spec VW Beetle!

Restomod vs Restoration

If you want a vintage Ford Bronco experience that far surpasses that of a restored G-Wagen, a classic car restomod is the way to go: and that’s where Velocity excels! A restoration simply takes a truck back to its original condition, while a restomod takes old cars to a new level. Velocity Broncos aren’t restorations; they are fully reimagined classics that have been completely modernized without losing their vintage appeal. These cars and trucks look straight out of the ‘60s and ‘70s, but they drive like brand-new vehicles.
