Velocity Acquires Classic Recreations

Velocity Acquires Classic Recreations

“Shelby Licensing is excited to grant a license to Velocity Restorations as they acquire Classic Recreations and take on the important mission of completing every in-process Shelby GT500 and Cobra build,” said Neil Cummings, CEO of Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc.

The classic car world got big news this week: Velocity, the industry’s largest bespoke restomod company, has acquired the assets of Classic Recreations—a move that both stabilizes and reshapes the future of high-end vehicle modernization.

The acquisition comes just months after Classic Recreations abruptly closed its doors, leaving behind unfinished builds and customers without support. Velocity wasted no time stepping in, securing the company’s intellectual property, equipment, and inventory through a court-approved bankruptcy sale. But perhaps most importantly, Velocity is working on a licensing agreement with Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc. to continue production of the legendary Shelby GT500 and Shelby Cobra—models that will remain part of the official Shelby registry.

A Lifeline for CR Customers

For Classic Recreations customers caught in limbo, Velocity’s move provides hope. The company will begin consulting with each affected owner individually to chart a path forward. While existing CR contracts remain with the former entity, Velocity is offering a chance to transition unfinished projects into its own vertically integrated production system, renowned for engineering rigor, craftsmanship, and quality control.

“We’re passionate about this industry and the people who love these American vehicles. When we heard what happened with Classic Recreations, our immediate thought was 'how can we help?' These are people who trusted a brand to bring their dream cars to life, and Velocity is in a position to keep those dreams moving forward—not just for our brand but for the entire restomod industry,” said Stuart Wilson, CEO of Velocity.

Beyond a Rescue: A Strategic Expansion

While the acquisition began as a customer-first response, it also represents a bold growth play for Velocity. The company is entering an accelerated expansion phase, adding carbon-fiber manufacturing capabilities through a partnership with Brothers Carbon and preparing to broaden its product lineup to include continuation Shelby models, custom Mustangs, and even parts and interiors.

“Shelby Licensing is excited to grant a license to Velocity Restorations as they acquire Classic Recreations and take on the important mission of completing every in-process Shelby GT500 and Cobra build. Velocity’s unmatched craftsmanship, resources, and passion for excellence make them the perfect steward to protect and advance the Shelby legacy for the next generation,” said Neil Cummings, CEO of Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc.

What This Means for the Industry

Classic car restomods are a niche but growing sector, blending timeless design with modern performance. Classic Recreations had long been one of the most recognizable names in the space, particularly for its licensed Shelby builds. Its closure rattled enthusiasts and left many questioning what would happen to the unfinished cars.

Velocity’s acquisition offers reassurance—and sets the stage for a stronger, more innovative restomod market. With its state-of-the-art production facility in Pensacola, FL, and a reputation for precision builds, Velocity is positioned not just to finish CR’s story but to expand the category altogether.

For fans of American automotive heritage, that’s good news.
