Featured Build: Tom Segura's Classic Chevy K5 Blazer Restomod Is No Joke

This might be Velocity's most exquisite Re-Engineered Classic™ Blazer to date!

At Velocity Restorations, every build is a statement of craftsmanship and passion, but some vehicles manage to raise the bar even higher. Comedian Tom Segura’s custom Velocity Heritage Series 1971 Chevy K5 Blazer is one such example, standing as an unapologetic fusion of bold style and luxurious innovation. Finished in a striking custom Midnight Red BASF Glasurit paint and paired with Velocity’s signature Blackout Package, this classic Chevy K5 Blazer creates a bold aesthetic that’s as in-your-face as Tom’s comedy style.

No Laughing Matter: Segura’s Blazer Means Serious Business

The deep Midnight Red finish shifts beautifully in the light, showing off the expert paintwork for which Velocity is known; in the sun, the truck shines in a metallic burgundy hue, but in the shadows, it comes off as almost black. This is the first K5 Blazer that Velocity has crafted with the Blackout Package, a popular option on the Bronco, and it gives this big truck a stealthy, sexy, and sinister look.

The craftsmanship doesn’t stop at the exterior. Open the door, and you’re welcomed into a cabin that’s been completely reimagined for comfort and class. Velocity’s design team spared no detail in making sure the interior delivered both form and function. The Velocity Exclusive center console is unique to the Heritage Series, and those beautiful door panels were custom built in-house to elevate the classic Blazer’s interior design with custom inserts and speaker mounts. All touch points are wrapped in black Velocity Leather upholstery, while the seats, steering wheel, and dash add Midnight Red contrast stitching

It’s the small touches that elevate this Blazer from a cool classic to a modern marvel. Velocity’s signature billet components give the cabin a refined, high-end feel. Tech upgrades like the Velocity Exclusive digital gauge cluster offer an intuitive, sleek interface, while the premium Focal Audio system makes sure Segura can blast his favorite playlists or podcasts with crystal-clear sound. And, of course, Vintage Air climate control and a custom hardtop have this truck ready to cruise in any weather.

Power and performance were a must for Segura, and Velocity delivered. This starts with a solid foundation consisting of the Velocity Exclusive frame built by Roadster Shop, which upgrades the Blazer to coilover shocks and power-assisted Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes. And under the hood sits a 6.2L LT1 V8, paired with GM’s advanced 10-speed automatic transmission to deliver raw power and smooth cruising. This drivetrain and chassis ensure Segura’s K5 Blazer has the performance and rugged capabilities to back up its badass appearance. DSC08331

Behind the Build: Tom Segura’s Visit to Velocity Restorations

More than just a comedian, Segura is a genuine car enthusiast. During the restoration of his Blazer, he visited Velocity HQ to witness the magic behind the scenes. His tour of Velocity’s state-of-the-art facility near Pensacola, Florida, not only gave him a first-hand look at the industry-leading process behind each build but also allowed him to drive several Velocity builds.

Segura’s through the expansive 135,000-square-foot space. They started at the “boneyard,” where old, tired classics await their transformation. From there, Segura witnessed the full Velocity build process, from chassis fabrication to expert metalwork, precision paint, and final assembly. He even spent time in the trim shop, getting a closer look at the quality materials and hand-stitched details that make each interior one-of-a-kind.

Segura was blown away by the team’s attention to detail and the 14-week process that turns these vintage vehicles into modern, reliable works of art. But the real fun started when he hit the test and tune area. Tom took the wheel of a K5 Blazer still undergoing shakedown testing and later jumped into a showroom Bronco and a 1968 Acapulco Blue Mustang. For Segura, who’s built a career on being relatable and genuine, seeing the craftsmanship up close and personally experiencing the performance made his visit that much more memorable.
