Follow Along as Velocity Builds a Fox Body Ford Mustang Restomod | Update No. 7

Few cars define the 1980s as vividly as Ford’s Fox Body Mustang, and now Velocity Restorations is redefining this icon as the newest addition to its lineup of Re-Engineered Classics™. Equal parts street cruiser, autocross sleeper, and drag-strip hero, the Fox Body earned cult status precisely because it was a blank canvas for enthusiasts. And that blank canvas is exactly where Velocity is picking up its brushes to transform this Fox Body from a worn-out survivor to a cutting-edge restomod.

This isn’t just a refresh; it’s the latest example of Velocity’s industry-leading Re-Engineered Classic, and the ’79-’93 Mustang acts as a perfect donor for this project. When completed, this Mustang will ride on a Roadster Shop chassis with Ford’s Gen III 5.0L Coyote V8 under the hood, but before we can get there, we’re tearing this car down to its bare bones, stripping off 30+ years of wear and abuse to have a fresh foundation on which to build.

Update #1 | June 5, 2025

After getting it hauled back to the shop, Velocity's R&D team got to work tearing this Mustang down to bare metal. In the metal department, the Mustang hits Station 1 of Velocity's build process, where the existing unibody is prepped to receive the Roadster Shop chassis. The frame and body panels are adjusted to return a level of precision unheard of back in the '80s, making it worthy of a Velocity build.

Update #2 | May 28, 2025

For this build update, we're giving you a closer look at the state-of-the-art Roadster Shop chassis on which this Fox Body will ride. It will be a huge step up for the Mustang in terms of chassis rigidity, and it features coilover shocks and four-wheel performance disc brakes.

Update #3 | June 25, 2025

Join us in the metal shop as we dig into building our Foxbody Mustang. Weeks 1-3 are spent doing main body work, cutting, welding, some fabrication, a lot of massaging, and aligning the new chassis up with the body. Yes, it's getting a good sized Whipple blower. We'll dig into that in a future update!

Update #4 | July 9, 2025

Catch up with the Foxbody Mustang as it leaves the metal shop and enters into the body shop to prep for paint. We're moving pretty quickly on this thing, but we have a lot of hours ahead of us. After body shop, comes the paint process.

Update #5 | Aug. 6, 2025

We're in the paint department getting this Mustang ready for some seriously shiny black paint. Random fact: Black is one of the hardest colors to prep for because gloss black shows EVERYTHING. If there's even the slightest imperfection, it will show.

Update #6 | Aug. 22, 2025

Our Foxbody Mustang is out of the paint booth and ready to go to the detail department for a final wet sand, cut, and polish. We're almost ready to start assembling this thing and make it a car again!

Update #7 | Sept. 23, 2025

Check in with the Foxbody as it goes through the detail department for a fresh wet sand, cut, and polish. This is the car's first time through the detail department, but we'll see the Mustang here one final time before it's unveiled, to get any surface swirls or contaminates that might appear during final assembly.
